A well-organized learning management system (LMS) is critical to fostering student engagement and success in a geometry class. This process statement outlines the structure and management of a geometry class using Schoology to maximize accessibility for students and educators.
Audience: High school students, primarily freshmen and sophomores.
Responsibilities: As a Geometry teacher, I strive to organize instructional materials in a clear, consistent, and easily navigable manner to support effective student learning.
Tools: Schoology Learning Management System.
Problem and Solution
Problem: Students can become overwhelmed or confused when navigating online class materials, especially when information is not clearly structured. A lack of organization can hinder their ability to locate assignments, lessons, and resources promptly.
Solution: By organizing the geometry class into a logical hierarchy—quarters, weeks, and daily lessons—and keeping the current week and quarter at the top, students can quickly access the most relevant materials. This structure promotes clarity and ensures student understanding of assignments.
Course Setup:
The course is divided into four quarters, with each quarter represented as a folder in Schoology.
Folders are labeled clearly, e.g., "Quarter 1," "Quarter 2," etc.
Weekly Structure:
Within each quarter, weeks are organized as subfolders (e.g., "Week 1," "Week 2"), each labeled with the date.
Each weekly folder contains five sub-sections for Monday through Friday.
Current Content Prioritization:
The current quarter folder is placed at the top of the course page for quick access.
The current week folder within the quarter is similarly moved to the top of the quarter's folder.
Daily Lessons:
Each day includes resources such as notes, videos, assignments, and assessments.
Interactive tools like Kahoot, Blooket, and Teacher Made are integrated into specific lessons to promote engagement.
Answer Keys and Recordings:
Upload all answer keys to the corresponding daily folders so students can review and self-correct their work.
Include a Loom recording of each formal teaching session in the daily folder.
Recordings and keys allow students to revisit lessons for review and enable absent students to catch up on missed instruction.
Assessments and Feedback
Integrate performance tracking tools such as Schoology's gradebook and external resources like Teacher Made, Performance Matters and Infinite Campus.
Use data from tracking tools to monitor progress and adjust instruction as needed.
Provide timely feedback on assignments to keep students on track.
The organized structure of the Geometry class in Schoology improves student accessibility and comprehension. By moving current quarter and week folders to the top, students can quickly locate materials and stay on track. The clear daily breakdown fosters a predictable routine, reducing confusion and enhancing engagement. This system supports both students and teachers by providing a streamlined, accessible, and efficient learning environment.
This structure can serve as a template for other classes, maximizing the functionality of Schoology while addressing the challenges of managing digital coursework.
